Grants Making a Comeback
HE, In The News Sunday, July 8th, 2007Interesting that alongside the very noticeable slagging off handed out to the Blairs now that they have left us to save the world, we are also seeing the return of things that should have never been so denigrated in the first place: university grants.
It appears that the Government will now award a full grant where families are earning less than £25K with a repayment holiday for 5 years whilst graduates find their feet after uni.
What these reforms don’t address is the housing crisis and the severe indebtedness that students find themselves after paying their way through college for 3 years or more.
In sum, a move in the right direction but, as is typical of New Labour, a grabline rather than wholesale, root-and-branch reform.
